You know you’re on to something when the GOP is up in arms about it.
In the latest installment of What is Happening in America 2021 Edition, a number of Dr. Seuss’s books are no longer being published because they contain offensive racial depictions, and the GOP has had enough.
Cancel culture started as a joke but has morphed into something very serious, and I’m here for it. Canceling someone or something for a controversial comment or action used to result in some social media backlash until the masses quickly moved on. Now cancel culture has become a very real consequence not just for celebrities and influencers but companies and politicians alike.
Cancel culture has empowered people to challenge the status quo and demand accountability from those in positions of influence and power.
Why is cancel culture so scary to the GOP? Because it is exposing the fact that conservatives are losing power in society; long gone are the ‘good old days’. A prime example is the recent decision of Hasbro to change the brand name of Mr. Potato Head to just Potato Head. Conservatives were deep in their feelings after this decision; Glenn Beck was quoted saying, “…it’s the end of an era. It’s the end of freedom in America.”
As with all things, can too much of something be bad? Absolutely. Cancel culture can, and we have seen it get out of hand, but as times change, so do the ways in which we deal. Maybe it is the end of an era. We live in a world where we can build up or tear down in 140 characters. That’s the real power.
The old school is coming to terms with the fact that the new school ain’t with the bullsh*t and demands accountability, and unfortunately for the GOP, if they don’t give it, we will take it. Cancel culture now resides online and off. At its essence, Cancel culture calls out and condemns a level of responsibility the GOP cannot and never has been able to handle.
Cancel culture puts the power where it has always belonged. Cancel culture stands up, points out, and seeks a remedy, but in a society where accountability and consequences often take a backseat, cancel culture gets a bad rep. It’s been called toxic and dangerous, but hasn’t cancel culture always existed in one form or another? Rumors, smear campaigns, and censorship. Cancel culture is a rebranding of sorts, now with a very convenient and fast gimmick: social media.
For all the negative that can be said about Cancel culture at the very root, it is a necessary corrective to the failure of the state to protect its people, and I am here for it.
